Knowledge of teens about classical music is surprisingly inadequate. When you see teenagers walking on the street with their earphones firmly implanted on their ears while swaying lightly to their own groove, you know for sure that they are not listening to classical music. Teens can easily identify the names of the musicians or bands who sang their favorite songs. But try asking them about Mozart, Bach or Beethoven and they will give you an empty gaze. So who is to blame for the unpopularity of classical music among teens? Video games, television and the internet have tremendous influence on the music preference of teens. However, the main reason for the lack of appreciation towards classical music is because they are just plain boring.
Classical music features very slow tempo and long pauses, which does not appeal to the turbo-charged teens. Kids these days are used to a fast-paced environment. They like to talk fast, walk fast, think fast, and they also want to grow fast. Knowing this, they surely would want their music to complement their fast-paced lifestyle, hence why they dig music with a more upbeat tempo.
Another reason why teens cannot seem to develop an appreciation to classical music is because of their complex nature. With pop songs, teens can easily relate to the lyrics since most are written based on the musician’s experience or basing from relevant events. Teens find it easier to relate to music that comes with lyrics, rather than a wordless classical composition. Though classical compositions can be powerful, this is not enough to keep the interest of teenagers.
With various online venues where one can download a variety of music genres for free or for a cheap price, who would want to stick with lousy and boring classical music? Furthermore, there are now high-quality cable connections, like a 7m hdmi cable, that allows teens to transmit audio signals from their tablet pcs or laptops to an HDTV. And with this, listening to high-definition audio accompanied by high-def video make the experience more worth their while. Unfortunately, technological advancements such as this add more insult to the injury since it buries the little interest teens have for classical masterpieces even more. Now, classical music has become the thing of the past and there is no indication that the popularity of this forgotten music genre will be revived anytime soon.
